This is my for first post so bear with me.
Just recently aquired this motor.
I was out on the water when engine lost power,I removed cover and discovered the carb float bowl was just hanging, and fuel was spilling out. in order to put it back in place I had to remove the carb, because all i had was a pair of pliers and a screw driver. In the process I removed the pickup roller screw, and the throttle cam, because i couldnt get to the carb bolts. Put everthing back together, but I didnt realize that there is a setting that needs to be made for the speed control linkage, now the engine wont start and is backfiring. could you tell me how to make the correct adjustment.?

Sorry yabut, I can't help with your question, maybe someone else will be along with an answer.

Your best bet would be to buy a repair manual, either from Mercury, or a generic one.

If you are near a large library, you may be able to borrow one from them.

First thing I would do is remove the carb and rebuild it and get that out of the way. While you have the carb off, look for a broken reed valve. Then, if they're OK, adjust the linkage as required. It must be in "Sync" for the motor to operate ptoperly and that may be the cause of the backfiring and no start. The Manual is invaluble for all of this, as was mentioned...
