1993 4.3 v6 alpha top end cutting out

this has been a recurring problem for years.

it never gives any indication as to when it will start or why.
may not do it at all in a full month of boating.
then.....out of the blue i can be cruising at 35 38 mph and all the sudden it's like someone cut the power to a couple cylinders.
not only do you feel it, you hear it,kind of a sputtering.
can't keep boat over about 25 mph once it starts this nuisance.
in the past i could stop boat,throw in neutral,give a few high revs,throw her in gear and gun it and after a couple tries straighten itself out......possibly for just a day,or then again only for a few minutes.

strange phenomenon.
through the years i've cleaned carb,always keep fresh water seperator filter,new plugs and cap.

one strange note.
last year i had to replace shifter switch, and for an entire summer i did not have problem.then fall hit.....
yep, back doing the same again.

any ideas?

First, start with getting the right manual... check out the "Adults Only" sticky.

Then you are going to have to determine(while the problem is happening) if it is fuel or ignition related. See same sticky for some good troubleshooting guides.

i did just that.then decided to ask the question.the adult only section was informative.



i was hoping someone would've ran into this on a late model 4.3.
again,it only happens at top speed.
kind of hard to check when it runs perfect at low speed.

Did you apply any of the information? It is only helpful if used.

There are too many possibilities, like:

Bad gas, water in gas, clogged filter/s, obstructed vent line, leak in fuel line, need for carb rebuild, overheating coil, defective pug or wire, weak or broken valve spring....The list goes on.

We need to know what testing you have performed in order to procede. "late model 4.3, cuts out at high RRM" is not enough information to offer any meaningful suggestions.

it was so simple i'm embarrassed to reply.just kidding.

i took the flame arrestor off and deep soaked it in purple power and water,and found everything from edisto island south carolina sand,mine,my wife's and my black labs hair, to oil and rug particles.

dried it out replaced it, and have'nt had a problem since.
