I am new to this size boat, always had a jet boat...I am thinking about buying this boat in MN for about $7,500 cash from a private seller. It's in really good shape for bemg 20 years old, has a 5.7 Mercruiser I/O with 260HP. I am really just looking for something that has some speed and a small area for me and my gf to sleep some weekends. I'm also hoping I can bring the nephews water skiing and tubing etc. It seems that this boat would fill that mold? I'm not set on it but any advice would be greatly appreciated, I will pay it forward on here with whatever I buy..... I work hard during the week and can't wait to spend my weekends on a good all around boat, thanks much!

Welcome to iboats!

Please put your general location/body of water in your signature line. We can give better advice/suggestions when we know where you are.

Depending on your location, that price may be a little high. Do you have enough experience to ascertain if the Sea Ray if free from stringer and transom rot? That should be your number one priority before considering anything else. Please post the listing if one is available for us to view, or pictures at the very least would help us draw up further opinions. We look forward to helping you spend your money! :D

What SS said. More info, please. I agree that the price seems a bit high, unless the boat is in really, really good shape. At 20 years old it's very important that you determine structural integrity and condition of all the running gear and accessories. If you can't do that, be prepared to hire someone who can- either an experienced MARINE (not automotive) mechanic or a professional boat surveyor.

You can get basic info here:

Thanks for the responses! I am familiar with the rotting problems but don't have the expertise in identifying those problems, the guy selling the boat also recommended that I get it checked out by a surveyor which I think will be the next step. There is a gentlemen selling the boat for the owner, I guess the owner bought this boat for his employees and they ended up not using it, but here is the link to the boat.... 24 Sea Ray Overnighter 1993

Do you think it would be a good all round boat, I would hate to buy something that can't pull a water skiing etc?

Thanks again!

With 950 hours on the clock, yes it got used. How HARD was it used during those 950 hours will have a huge impact on the longevity of the powertrain. Engine wear not withstanding, you should not expect this boat to perform as a ski boat. It is heavy, and at the razors edge of being underpowered already. If you put 4-6 adults on board and all of the required gear, PLUS your coolers and toys, it will not be pleasant for a beginning skier. If you must have a cuddy, and want real ski boat performance, you better look for the 454/Bravo equipped version. With either package, you will also get abysmal fuel mileage. Figure on 2 miles per gallon loaded to capacity and pulling an adult skier.

Boating is a compromise...and in this case, I think you need to decide if you truly want an "all around boat" like a bowrider...or a purpose built ski boat like a Malibu or Moomba. Cuddy cabins are particularly frustrating because they waste valuable entertainment space.

If I were in the market for that exact boat, I would offer $5k for it and go from there. That is assuming excellent compression numbers and dry bones. Thankfully, that cockpit is fiberglass and has scuppers. That does work in your favor towards keeping the sub-structure dry.

Right on the hours, he got from a guy in Michigan I guess.... That is exactly what I was concerned about as far as power and being able to function in a sport capacity etc. Your comment and information is more than appreciated and a real eye opener for me, I think being able to enjoy the water activities is probably more important to me than being able to sleep on it, thanks much!
