I have a 200HP Mercury XRI outboard motor. It has a reserve oil tank located in the boat and also a tank bolted on the motor. When the motor is started, it seems like it is burning alot of oil. It blows out alot of smoke until the boat warms up a bit (after about 3-5 minutes) and I put it in gear and the smoke slows down a bit. After the motor has been running for awhile and after it has been in gear for awhile it doesnt smoke much at all. The reason I am concerned is because I notice that other motors with the same horsepower or more that, when started, doesnt seem to smoke as much as my 1993'. Is it because the motor is older that it may run richer at start? Im pretty sure the oil/gas mixture is done via the computer in the motor. Should I be concerned? Its better to run the engine with too much oil..

Sorry but it is done mechanically with the throttle movement. Excess smoke can come from 2 sources, the bleed filter stopped up above the VST tank or the pressure fitting on crankcase is defective allow oil tank to overpressurize forcing excess oil into VST tank.
