1992 SFM190 Max Weight Aft?

So this boat came with a Merc 135 Black Max and I have added a 2004 Merc 9.9 BigFoot kicker. The weight of both motors adds up to about 580lbs. I also have 2 12V marine lead acid batteries located under the transom well (house and cranking). Add to that a couple of downriggers hanging of each stern corner gunwale. This is starting to feel like a LOT of weight aft and I'm a little concerned about trolling in a heavy following sea and having a couple of large adults move back to the transom to fight/land fish.

Does anyone have any idea what the limit is for adding weight to the stern of one of these boats? I know Starcraft made many of these type over the decades and someone out there must have some idea what the reasonable limit is. There's just no way I can get anyone at Starcraft to even give me the time of day about a 30yo boat whether they designed and manufactured it or not.

Thanks for the help.

Welcome aboard

I would be moving the batteries and coolers to the bow myself.

keep in mind, Large adults are subjective. are we talking 185# people or 300# people.

the capacity tag on the transom is the total weight of motor/gear/fuel/people/beer that the boat is rated for.

what does that tag say?

Then add up everything that you have in the boat

each battery is 55# so #110
the fuel tank is 30 gallons, so add 205# for fuel
each case of beer is 40#
your two motors are 580#

right there you are at 935#

Hey Scott, thanks for the reply.

I'm also a grumpy old guy that plays with boats but we don't drink so there's at least 40# off, haha. I can't really move those batteries forward as I already have 2 large batteries powering my bow trolling motor (autopilot when trolling with the stern kicker) mounted in the step leading to the bow from the cockpit.

I'm still under the weight capacity for the vessel even with all that. However, that number is probably assuming a balanced (fore - aft) distribution of that weight.

I'm just trying to get some feedback regarding this. Its a common scenario for these boats to have a big main and a 10 (or so) HP kicker and I know a lot of guys run a house bank and a cranking bank. But to me it just seems like its starting to become a lot of aft distributed weight. When the ice clears out here in MI I'm going to test the new setup out on a flat inland lake before I venture out on the big water where I usually spend my time trolling for salmon/steelhead.

You could always add more weight, to the bow that is. A bow mount electric makes for more versatility in your fishing boat. My 80# thrust Minn Kota weights in at 90lbs and there's 2 x gp 27 batts for it up there too with onboard charger.
