1992 omc cobra lower shift cable

I have a 1992 omc cobra sterndrive and I took the drive and gimbal pivot housing for repaint. We'll trying to take the nut off that holds the shift cable in the pivot housing it kept wanting to twist the whole cable. We'll there is a few spots where the outer part of the cable the wires are twisted a little and 1 or 2 broke. What's the best way of getting that thing out without damaging it. I also disconnected it from the engine side. Any info will be greatly appreciated as I just cost myself 150$

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,... If the OMC cables are like the Merc cables, that nut, IS the outer housin' of the cable,....

At this point just cut it off, 'n pull it,...

Yer needin' a New one now, anyways,...

Like Bondo says, the nut is part of the cable.

You have to be at this point then you can get it. Now you will have to be here anyhow to replace the cable.

If a few of the outer wires are broke, not the cable itself. Does it need to be replaced. The cable itself is still good. I was gonna try to get by with the cable for this season, because this winter I have to pull my engine to fix the transom and it would be a lot easier to do the cable then.

If you don't replace it now, you risk damaging your dog clutch with is a multi thousand dollar repair.

What's the easiest way to put a new one on. Do you feed it through the back first so that you can attach it to the pivot housing without damaging it. I have the manual, but it really don't explain enough about that.

At the point where you are now, you would be saving $100 but risking $2000. I would change it, it's not that hard and will make you life way easier to put the thing back together. If there are wires showing through the casing, then water is getting in there and it is a matter of a short time before the inner cable starts to go foul. I attached mine to the pivot housing, fed it through the tube with some dish soap as lube.

Of course you should change it, vs running it having it jump out of gear, or not shift to neutral and causing an accident.
You can tape the new cable with duct tape to the old one and pull the old one up and through pulling the new after it. Pull out the old one on the engine end.

That is what you got to do works for me.

Thanks for all the info. I pulled the cable out yesterday and figured out how it is suppose to go. I don't know if somebody that owned the boat before ran a fuel hose from the transom plate up to the top of the motor or if all cobras are like that, because I thought the bellows for the cable was attached down at the transom plate. That's why I was debating on replacing the cable, cause there is no room inside the engine bay in my boat. Once again thanks for the info guys.

The bellows are on the end of the hose, it is supposed to be like that, AFAIK. That's why you need the lube to get the cable through the hose. Good luck!

I need somebody's help here. I just can't remember how to start a new thread. I could be doing it right now..lol, but can somebody explain to me how to do it. I would appreciate it. At the same time if I am doing it right, right now then my question is, I ordered new exhaust bellows for my 92 omc cobra and the new bellows don't have any holes in it, now how is that suppose to work or has anybody else ever experienced that. Please help, because I'm trying to get my boat put back together.

Ayuh,.... The exhaust bellows can be slotted, or not, it really don't matter in any way,...
It's Always wet, inside, 'n out,....

OMC used slotted, Merc, 'n others solid walls,... No difference in the way it works,...

At the top of the OMC forum, upper port-side corner is the Big Red Button, that says "POST NEW THREAD", to start new threads,...

That must be aftermarket because all the OE ones and most other after market ones have the slits cut into the bottom. This change was made to reduce backpressure so I'd return those and get the right ones.

nope that is how it is, there is a tube attached at the transom plate, the shift cable goes inside and comes out up top out of the little bellows. These rarely if ever leak so its a big improvement over the Merc design. See part #104 in this pic....
