I am having trouble with my 115 mercury outboard.I have had it now for 10 years I bought it new.The trouble I am having is there is no hole shot, decreased top end speed, and it won't even free rev to the red line.I had the compression checked and that seemed fine. The oddest part is that when it finaly gets up to speed it seems to be at 5200 rpms, however the top end speed seems to have dropped about 10 mph or so.I should probably also mention this is an inline 4 cylider that idles on 2 and the others kick in at about 1800rpms.

I defer to the Merc. folks on this one. I remember those engines.

tinknocking247:

You might have a spun prop hub. That's the only thing I can think of. I have never had that model of Merc. I stuck with the old inline 6. I wanted ALL 6 ALL the time. I don't think it was one of Mercury's best moves. Just my opinion though.

Craig :)

You may have already checked this but you didn't mention in your post. Are you getting spark on all four cylinders? That would be my first guess. Second would be to look at the carbs. For example we had one of these motors in last fall running poorly under load. It turned out that the float needle seat had un-screwed itself.

Another possibility? Floatation in the hull is water soaked and your trying to push several hundred more pounds? Does the boat sit lower in the water than it used too? Is the hull clean?

Hello,
I had an 89' Merc 100 that was just like your 115. I had the motor for 10 years and I had good overall luck out of it. The 2+2 system works well unlike the 4-6-8 GM engine of the same idea. I too would check for a weak spark.
Good Luck,
Little Bear

Tin, something dont add up..if you are down on power, you will be down on rpm's......if you are down on speed you will be down on rpm's....and you have 5200 rpm for a max [normal].....something is lying to you.....
