1992 Johnson 175 Faststrike

1992 Johnson 175 Faststrike starts ok, then after a few minutes of running I can feel a miss and the engine shuts down.<br />Sometimes it will start back up but only run for a few minutes.Other times it will not start at all.After waiting for some time it will start again.<br />Have replaced powerpack and sensor and same problem occured.<br />Thanks for any ideas or help....Mark mdsettle@peoplepc.com

Forgot to add that I have checked for fuel or carb problem and everything checks ok .

Ahoy, Mark. Did you check your fuel tank venting, fuel tank, lines, primer bulb, etc.?<br /><br />Along with the: "change parts until the problem goes away" syndrome, the: "everything is okay, it just doesn't work" syndrome will delay (even prevent) solution by a consultant. We can't see, hear or feel your engine. We need symptoms and facts.<br /><br />Pump your primer bulb when it threatens to quit. Does that pick it back up? Loosen your tank cap. Do you get a whoosh!?<br /><br />After it has died and is refusing to restart, spray a bit of WD-40 into the air intake. Does that get it to start?<br /><br />When it has died and is refusing to start, remove a spark plug lead and see if it will arc 1/2" to the block. Try them all, one at a time.<br /><br />Run it with the bonnet off. Does it go longer before quitting, or even continue without quitting?<br /><br />Standing by. . . <br />JB

The coils arc to the plate between the coils and power pac on these engines, and did you get new pack and sensor in same box? Check wires from stator and sensor to pac. You need little blue box to set timimg and check sensor.

Tank,bulb,vent,and fuel flow good.<br />I did see some discoloration on the plate between the coils and pack.<br />Looked to me like it could possibly be arching in that area.<br />Is there a way to insulate the plate..?<br />Thanks Mark

If it is arcing, needs new coil. Run at night with cover off look for arcing. The easy way to check ignition without peak reading meter is timimg light one cylinder at a time. If light is steady when engines misfires or stumbles. the ignition should be ok.
