My 1992 120 Force has exhaust fumes coming up around the powerhead and I noticed that the 1 1/2 inch rubber sleeve that ports the tell tale water thru the back of the chassis (above the waterline) is secured by a rusting hose clamp. Could a leak there be causing my problem? Are exhaust fumes as well as cooling water ducted out the tell tale holes? If so I would have thought that cooling water would also be sprayed inside the cowling but it isn't. The exhaust fumes seem to be coming from the unvisible (bottom) side of the rubber sleeve or possibly from a leak below that sleeve. Thanks for any input. Ewjili

There should only be water in the telltale hose.<br />This comes right from the water jacket, if exhaust were in that hose, water would be in your engine. <br /><br />Here are two diagrams. One of the powerhead, showing the spacer plate and gasket at the bottom. The second shows the driveshaft housing with the square exhaust tube.<br /><br />

<br /><br /><br />Sorry to say, you are probably gonna have to remove the powerhead and replace that gasket. And probably need to replace the gasket on the exhaust tube as well.<br /><br />A repair manual is needed. The Clymer Force Repair manual is good. The parts are available from Mercury, or here:<br /><br />mercruiserparts.com/Show_Pictures3.asp?dnbr=823644&ivar=images/FORCE/823644/33.png&inbr=1470&bnbr=160&bdesc=CYLINDER+BLOCK<br /><br />mercruiserparts.com/Show_Pictures3.asp?dnbr=823644&ivar=images/FORCE/823644/43.png&inbr=1470&bnbr=220&bdesc=DRIVESHAFT+HOUSING

Roscoe, I am having this same issue and would like to know where i could get parts 17 and 30 in your diagram? Or at least provide me with the part numbers of those parts.

Both the drive shaft housing seal, and the exhaust tube seal are no longer available from Mercury. I don't know if anyone is making one aftermarket.
Sorry, don't know what to suggest for you.

OK, thanks anyway...i've been hearing that exhaust in the cowling is just a typical force issue and the easiest fix is to set the idle speed high and it will come back down once the cowling is put back on...i'll post the result
