OK guys, one last shot at this one: Engine starts fine for an old 2-stroke, runs 38 mph in flat water on a Montauk 17 with 2 POB and runs fine in gear at any speed. Still an occasional sneeze and stall while in neutral at idle, usually fairly soon after some prolonged low speed running (like watching kids sailing). Also, seems to make a difference if the engine is trimmed all the way in, giving the head a slight angle down and away from the boat. Looking for a last ditch effort to save this engine from the boneyard (aka my wife hatesthe stalling thing)...
Best I can remember over the past year we have: drained the fuel tank to find no debris or water, checked pickup, created a tank vent, been very careful with oil mixture, run SeaFoam, run Marvel, switched to 93 octane fuel, changed fuel supply lines, changed fuel filter/water separator cartridge, rebuilt the fuel pump, multiple cleanings and a complete overhaul on both carbs, multiple clearings of both fuel drains, new spark plugs, new plug wires, wire loom over the new wires, water pump rebuilt, flushed cooling water passages, new thermostats, and tinkered with the idle set for about 700 rpm in gear in water...and I'm sure to be forgetting something...
Any further thoughts would really be appreciated...
