ok, I have a 1992 evinrude 70 hp outboard. model # ve70tlend/ serial # go3113714.

this motor will run like a singer sewing machine for an hour on the lake, turn it off....then you can try to crank it for an hour with no results,......the next day it will run like a bucking bull and get it back home and hook up to the muffs and its a sewing machine again. on the flipside I can adjust it in the yard at home and runs great, then get it to the water 30 minutes later and it runs horrible again. my mechanic has been working on it off and on for two weeks, he gets it adjusted and it runs great, I get it back and it runs great for half a day then its back to the craziness again. we've (mech. and myself) cleaned and gone through the carbs. , kill switch had a short, but fixed that and still has issues cranking on and off at random times, adjusted all the throttle, carb, lean mix adjustments etc. ....new plugs, they have good fire. one more thing, when its running good, there are no skips or misfires,......when it starts running crazy it misfires along with throttleing up really high rpms that you have to manually adjust back down, and yes the throttle controls are working fine and not sticking. can anyone help, im at a loss!!!!!

When it quits on you, check your spark. It should jump a 7/16 " open air gap on a spark tester. Sounds like an ign prob.

I agree it sounds like an ignition problem the most common problem on those for what you are describing would be a power pack. Like the gentleman said above when it starts doing it check the spark make sure it is jumping an appropriate gap. However if it is that does not mean it is still not ignition the power packs on these things alot of times when they are breaking down "throw the timing around" If your spark looks good during when it is acting up refer to your service manual on how to index the timing on each individual cylinder.

good luck
