1992 Bayliner shift problems

I have a 1992 Bayliner Capri 20 footer with a 3.0 Mercruiser engine. Engine starts just fine. Problem is with the shifting. I adjusted the cable and seemed to shift fine when out of water. When in water the engine revs but will not engage in forward or rev. Any ideas? Thanks! Ken

bad coupler,prop hub,damaged/broken shift cable<br />does it overheat in the water (coupler )<br />when in gear can you rotate the prop by hand.(gear/shaft damage)

It is stiff but I can rotate it by hand when in gear. It doesn't overheat. I checked the cable and it moves the shifter back and forth.I'll check the coupler. Thanks alot! Ken
