Hi guys. I've got a 1992 bayliner capri with the 4.3 mercruiser. I took it out this weekend for the first time this year. It ran fine for awhile. We were fishing all weekend so pretty much trolling just in gear at idle for hours at a time. After idle for about 3 or 4 hours we went to leave and go back to camp. Running wide open for a couple mins and it started cutting out and eventually died. We let it sit for a few mins and eventually got it started again and couldn't get it up over a few 1000 rpms. We limped back to camp. The next morning wot out to the fishing for 15-20 mins just fine. Idled around for 4 or 5 hours and wot back to camp and it started cutting out again. It sat for about 4 hours and we pulled the fuel filter off and kind of blew it by hand since the marine shop didn't have this weird fuel filter I have. We fished 2 or 3 more times this weekend and didn't have cutting out problems again but only ran wot a few times for not longer than 5 - 15 mins at a time. Also when it was doing it I could rev the engine in neutral with no cut out. Only cut out with load.
My question is where do I begin with this do I chalk it up to old ethanol gas in the tank (prob 4 or 5 gallons) left from last season or do I need to dig deeper? does it sound like a filter problem or sediment problem? Or electric fuel pump problem?
Second question I've got a strange fuel filter on this engine. It's a metal cylinder with a rubber hose incoming and hard pipe outgoing. The parts house had the stAndard mercruiser 4.3 fuel filters but they looked nothing like mine. And on the package it said except certain 1992 model 4.3's. obviously I am one of these certain 4.3s why did they do this and are they junk? Should I change it over to something better? I've had the boat for 8 or 9 years and never changed any of the fuel filters so I know this doesn't help but I'm not sure this is my problem or if I even have a problem. Like I said it didn't do it again? Do I have other filters deeper that I should change possibly in the fuel pump or in the carb?
Sorry for the long post but thanks for any help.
