Hello to all-

I've known of a 1992 Baja Islander 232 that's been sitting up since 2006, under a good leakproof carport with a very nice canvas cover on it. I've looked it over a few times. The owner is a older gentleman, his son couldn't afford it and from what I gather the Dad paid off the note. It has the mercruiser 7.4 liter, bravo outdrive, captains call exhaust. The interior is in mint condition, as is the hull, never has touched shore. He's told me he won't take less than 15k for it. I'm very interested in it. Its on a roadrunner tandem axle trailer. Is he way off or is this a hell of a deal? I don't feel like it has many hours on it. I am concerned that it has sat since 2006. Off my head I realize it would need a battery or batteries, 4 new trailer tires, all fluids changed, impeller change. What would this boat have cost new? It has never seen any salt or brackish water I know that. Has a brand new stainless prop on it.

Thanks!
Bryan

That pice is way, way high- on the order of 'nuts'. It's worth no more than half that in VERY good condition, and that's if an inspection/survey and sea trial confirm it. Oddly, NADA doesn't list a 232 Islander for 1991, 1992 or 1993- they list some others (close), and they came with an 8.1 liter, not 7.4. Anyway, take a look at NADA.

Don't be surprised if this goes nowhere. I've been down this road before with sellers who are so out of touch with reality that there's no common ground to begin a serious negotiation.

Good luck in your search!

Ok thank you so much. I am going off what the owner says, it may very well be a 1994..

According to NADA, the '232' Islander was made between 1996 and 2002. Big difference in fair market between a 20 year old boat and a 10 year old boat. You need to look at the HIN on the upper right side of the transom. The last couple of digits tell you the year of the boat. Then look here:

NADA is pretty inaccurate in reflecting 'real world' purchases, but it'll at least give you a clue. Actual deals vary a lot depending on where you live and the popularity of the boat you're looking at. You're also shopping in the prime selling season. If you buy now you'll pay top dollar. I buy in the Fall- up here I've bought 3 boats in the past 5 years (each bigger than the last) and never paid more than 75% of NADA value for any of them.

My advice is to find out what boat it is really and also the year. You can get the year from the HIN which is imprinted on the upper right portion of the transom, just below the rub rail. The last couple of digits will be the year. Also get the model number, which should be on the side somewhere.

Then take a look on http://www.nadaguides.com and you will be getting near a price. You will have to figure in the trailer, etc.

I would be concerned about an engine that has not run in 6 years. A thorough inspection and sea trial would be in order.

As an approximation, you are looking at under $10K on NADA, depending on the exact model/year.
