Motor won't start when it is cold, I can hear the choke solenoid clicking but I'm not sure if it is actually working. To start the motor I have to spray a little ether in it, then it will start the rest of the day just fine.

I suspect that your choke is not closing. Look into the carb inputs and see if the choke solenoid is actually closing the choke plate.

And.. .never use ether on a 2 stroke. It has no lubricant in it and it presents an explosion risk. Use premixed gas/oil mix.

Do you have a fuel enrichment valve or actual choke on that engine? Merc abandoned chokes on a lot of engines years ago.

Easy to tell the difference. The solenoid is (should be) mounted near the carbs and is probably visited by a black/yellow wire. If it were a choke there would be mechanical linkage from it to the carbs. If you see rubber hoses of about 1/4" with no linkage, it is a fuel enrichment valve.

The fuel enrichment valve dabbles raw gas into the carbs without it having to be sucked up in the normal "venturi" fashion. Result is added fuel when you need it for cold starts.

Pressure to inject the fuel comes from the primer bulb pressure so it has to be pumped up good and firm.

You need to have the fast idle all the way up....but be ready to cut it back to a couple thousand rpms when it lights off.

Turn the key to ON, push in and hold for say 30 seconds then while still holding in, roll over to START. If it doesn't light off in 30 seconds of grinding on it. Stop, firm up the squeeze bulb and do it again.

If it fails on the second attempt, pull the hose from a carb and see if fuel is actually getting to the carbs when you push in on the key with the bulb firm.

Get back with your findings.
