Hello;
I just brought another boat & it had a 1988 40hp Nissan outboard NS40C. The starter is shot (it was all rusted to Hell-I'm guessing it's the original).
With the help of a neighbor friend of mine, I cleaned it up & tried rebuilding it but, it still doesn't function properly. The starter is a Hitachi # S108-98 & it costs anywhere between $180.00-$250.00+ to buy (depending where) & the 1992 is about $84.00. Anyway what I was wanting to know is, if a starter from a 1992 Nissan NS40C would work (see link)? Outside of a bolt hole on both sides near the top of the 1992 starter, I see no fundamental difference between the 2 starters.
How about between a Hitachi S108-98 & a S108-94? Thanks

Year is irrelevant. A 40C is a 40C. The correct new OEM part is
346760100MSTARTER MOTOR
Aftermarket starters are seldom of the same quality as the OEM. The 2-cylinder 40C was obsoleted by the 40D (3-cylinder) around 1991 or 1992.

Yes, I know, nothing beats OEM (usually). It's a matter of affordability (about a $100.00 price difference).
Anyway, you're saying the 1992 starter won't work at all or properly on my 1988 Nissan NS40C??
Also I think I discovered what that bolt hole on the side of the 1992 was for, it's where the ground cable hooks up.
Like I said before, everything else looks just about the same (specifics please).
Let me know
Thanks

If the starter is for a 40C, it is the right fit (supposedly). If it is for the 40D2, there are probably some differences, maybe just the ground lug (dunno). Ya takes yer chances with aftermarket "one size fits all" stuff.

The OEM starter for the 40D2 is
3C8760101MSTARTER MOTOR

The OEM parts are available, albeit at a higher cost. You decide...
BTW... if the parts were identical, Tohatsu would use the same part (and number). Supercedes are only for improved items. Since the part numbers are different, I must assume that the parts are different as well. It would appear that your "1992" part is for the 40D2. You would need to contact the retailer to confirm. Since he lists motors by "year" (irrelevant in Tohatsu land) instead of "model" (critical for Tohatsu/Nissan), he probably won't be able to confirm nor deny the REAL application.
