On my 25hp 1992 Evinrude I replaced my water pump a couple of months ago it was working great until the other day. I pulled apart the lower unit inspected the water pump and pick up like seem to be nothing wrong and also tested the thermostat what else could cause this problem..

If your motor sat for awhile, pee hole could have got stopped up by spiders or bugs. Run a piece of weed eater in the pee hole and try to clean it out, if your using a barrel make sure you have enough water..

It only set over night I blew out the hose the water is a couple of inches over the cavitation plate but I guess things like that can happen over night so I will try that.

The water pump has to be submerged as it is not self priming. A couple inches over the anti-cav plate is probably not enough.

I don’t know because it has been working in that tub through 3 water pumps in about 6 years I usually change them out every 2 years per typical maintenance this pump has only been in there 2 months and has been working great in the tub and river I started the engine up in the tub before I take it out as usual and worked great this past Sunday came home it sat only one night and Monday I started it back up in the tub again full of water as usual and nothing at all. I took the lower unit apart everything looked great and clean in the pump and pick up line. I took the Thermostat out tested it worked good cleaned a little bit of trash I thought that may could be the problem put it all back together lined up pick up like where it’s supposed to go and still nothing.

So is the motor overheating? Top of the head too hot to touch?

Tell tale aside, sounds like a blockage somewhere in a water passage. I would pull off the lower unit, and run some water up the tube (engine not running), and see if that flushing clears a blockage. Water should exhaust down the leg, and the tell tale may work as well.

Update: today I took the lower unit back off took a drill put it on the shaft and spun it to sit if it pumps water in the tub it pumps great so I blew all the lines out with compressed air and everything seemed to have good flow of air coming out of it. put it all back together and started it and still no water coming out can a bad thermostat be the cause of that or no because it looks like it is stuck open which don’t make any since because the water would flow through..

I've had more success flushing with water under some pressure (say, medium hose pressure). Not so much success with compressed air. Need to rig something to provide a fit over the water tube.

That aside, the t.stat cavity has a bypass, and that could be plugged up by some of that debris you mentioned.
