Hi all, I took the old Mariner for stroll down Sea Foam lane last night. She was running rough after 6 months of storage and no wet fuel.

It smoked as I expected but never cleared up even after three 15 minute run and soak routines. I put it back on normal gas (non ethanol) and she's still running rough. It seems to cycle, she tries to clear up and just about makes it then back fires, blows a cloud of smoke and then starts the cycle again.

The plugs looked o.k. but I have a new set arriving today. I'm thinking the symptoms are like plugs that are wet and finally clear but when that happens the engine is usually fine. In this case it never gets fully cleared so I'm leaning more towards a bad switch box.

It could be carbs but it doesn't change at any throttle position (it's always rough).
It got dark before I could pull the plugs again last night. I'll do that tonight and replace them.

The CDI switch box was replaced about 2 years ago by the P/O. They also changed the rectifier (it has the small single).

I'm thinking that this problem happened before and they missed the fact that it's actually a bad stator that keeps blowing the switch box.
