Hi, this is my first posting but I've been reading for a while. I have a 1991 Chris Craft with a 7.4 and King Cobra i bought a few years ago. since this is my first real boat, (not a dinghy!) i'm still learning how it works. The shifter feels stiff and it's hard to find neutral and i can't really 'feel' when it goes into gear, besides that, it'll do 38mph and runs great. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated, Rick.

Re: 1991 King Cobra stiff shifting

Omc Cobras are notorious for having shifting issues. Simply put , there are many adjustments that can cause the shifter to not act right. I got so fed up with it that I now have a mercruiser set up on my boat. If you want to learn alot about adjustments, check out Stuart Hastings articles here. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...x-TyCQ&usg=AFQjCNEHEJSt9awDxaXuX4x-fssphNWqpg Pretty much the bible here for information on adjustments for omc era boats. Also buy yourself a original manual for your set-up. This will help greatly when trying to make adjustments. Not being able to find neutral can be a dangerous situation at the wrong time, be careful. Good luck.

Howdy, and welcome aboard!

You problem sounds like a defective lower shift cable.

The Hastings article won't be of a lot of help because yours is a Cone-clutch drive.

Determine your model number and then go to http://epc.brp.com/ to find the part number for your lower shift cable. You may have either a 1991 or 1990 model engine and drive.

The lower shift cable is indicated in the pic below (#21)
0986151 SHIFT CABLE ASSY.

I also found the following, 0986151 Part replaced by OMC0987678

Iboats has the Sierra replacement for it: http://www.iboats.com/Shift-Cable-A...5667885--**********.846605318--view_id.173075

I used one the 1991 model numbers (744APERGD 1991). (there are 3 for 1991 and 1 for 1990) ensure that you use your model number to verify the correct OMC part number.

Also, you need to obtain an OEM OMC service manual that is correct for your model (Seloc or Clymer won't cut it either)

Regards

Rick
