1991 90 degree V6 cross flow 150hp 35amp charge system. Problem: Dead cold, runs fine. Get 1/2 mile down river, drops number 5 cylinder (bottom cylinder on drivers side bank). Other 5 cylinders running great according to plug readings. Replaced coil and wire on number 5, still same problem. Replaced power pack with brand new OMC factory replacement, still same problem. I am now down to the timer sensor, but dealer (who desperately wants me to bring it in so he can RIP ME OFF - I am speaking from experience here, not bad-mouthing dealers)says it might be stator. Please correct if wrong - timer sensor has 6 double wound coils, 1 used for start, 1 used for run. Stator coils supply power to power pack. If stator was bad, wouldn't I have more than one cylinder misssing? SOMEONE PLEASE HELP. I have been struggling with this problem for several months - I really want to get my boat running so I can go fishing and spend time with my Dad, which is very important to me. Any advice will be apprieciated.

What does the #5 sparkplug look like when it goes dead? Is it wet or dry?
Did you ever replace this spark plug? Put it on the other side and see if the problem moves.

If the #5 sparkplug is dry it might be fuel related. Probably a stuck float or float valve. There could be just two positions, fully closed and almost fully closed. The #5 carb just run out of fuel. Working fine for half a mile you says. Is that distance shorter if you go fast and longer if you go slow?

I hope you'll go fishing any day now.

/Bear
