I have a 1991 225 HP Johnson that seems to have choke problems. The engine has had a very hard time so I starting cold. When it is warm it starts instantly. When I removed the cover over the carbs I can see that hwen I advance the throttle wafer valves open as they should. However, when I depress the key to choke it teh valves do not snap back shut as I believe they are supposed to.

I have tested the primer pump by getting the engine warm and depressing the key switch with the revs up. They engine stalls out as a result of the increased fuel flow so I knwo the primer pump is working.

Are the wafer valves supposed to snap shutwhen choked and how are they controlled so I can start chasing it down.

Thanks in advance

Sam

Those wafers you see are not choke butterflys but are the throttling plates. The engine is "choked" by injecting fuel into the intake manifold when the key is pushed in and the engine is cranked.

The motor has a primer not a choke. When you push the key in it injects fuel into the intake manifold.

Try this:
Prime the system (pump the bulb).
Turn the key ON (do NOT engage the starter).
Push the key in and hold for an 8 count.
Turn the key to Start.

The motor should start almos instantly.

Never run the motor with the air box off.

Good luck!

Thanks guys, I will try holding the key in then starting. I believe that in the past my engine have closed the plates as part of the choke systrem. This may be incorrect or just incorrect for this engine.

Sam

The E/J motors have not used a "choke" for many years. The primer is a much better deal. You'll love it once you get the hang of it.

Let us know how you make out.

Good luck!

Well after being sure you guys had no clue what you were talking about I went home and tired it anyways. Depressed the key for a 5 count and cranked. Well what do you know the dang thing started right up.

I guees that what you get from never having owned an engine past late 70's vintage to a new generation(?) engine with the bells and whistles.

Thanks,
Sam

Scared ya, huh? Lol!

I'm glad it worked for you. Actually your comment about the motor losing RPM's when you hit the primer save a bunch of time figuring out if the thing worked in the first place.

Enjoy!

That trick was right in the book. Probably should have seen if they have instructions for starting hte thing too.

Sam
