I currently have a 1991, Johnson 225. The engine runs well but seems to really heat up at trolling idle and trolling speeds. The engine does not overheat but sits juts under the red area on my guage. At crusing speeds the engine runs very cool and never even gets up to the 1/2 way mark on the guage ( this is the old style guage that does not have temp just a red areas for too cold, 2 sections of black for ok temps and a red for too hot.)

I have changes the thermos stats and this did not seam to make any difference. The pee stream is decent and does not appear to have any steam in it that woudl incdicate overheating. Is this engine running too hot and if so what shoudl I do about it?

Thanks in advance,
Sam

When was the last time you replaced the water pump? Most people replace only the impeller but this is wrong. If you use the boat on a regular basis I would recomend replacing the entire pump and housing every year. It sounds like you are not getting enough water to the block.

lower unit is less than a year old and that includes new water pump and impeller. Anyother ideas.

Would a worn impeller slip at low speed and cause it to get warm?

Sam

This engine runs hotter at idle. Sounds normal to me.
