I have a '91 (I believe) Force 90hp. I was told it runs good but wont shift. I want to test the spark and compression bafore I fix the lower unit. The wiring harness has an 8 pin connector. Anybody know how to do that?

The 91 didn't use a connector with an 8 pin "anything"????
They used a screw down buss bar with wire connectors.

Post pics of the electrical on the motor and the cable you have.

Myself I always had a cable/key to do what you need to do.

The no shift, try spinning the prop as you manually try to shift???
The internal parts need to be moving for them to work right.

The seal where the shift shaft goes through can be seizing, remove and clean the metal around the hole.

Post pics of the motor and gear housing or shift mechanism????

when I look at the shift shaft on the motor I am seeing splines exposed. Almost like they were working on it but it seems to work fine. I dont know if its supposed to be like that or what. the main problem I just found is that the prop shaft is visibly oscillating. it looks like it was twisted and bent from hitting a rock or being used with one prop blade missing or something. you can see the twist in this pic if you look at the base of the splines.

You have the Mercury ignition-system that Force went to in '92 forward
I you would send pics. of the ignition-coils, we would be able to tell you is it's the early version of the "last" one.
Either way, if the plug is not plugged in to the controls you will have to jump the starter to crank the engine & check for spark

That prop-shaft is done, likely the reason why the lower-unit is not shifting right. do you have pics. of shift-shaft ?

Now that I seen a pic. of the lower-unit, this is also Mercury LU

My mistake. The motor is a 1995. The pics wont upload even if I resize them. mainly I need to know how to check spark without controls.

Actually the prop shaft might be usable???
It probably had a stainless prop on there and hit something pretty hard.
The splines just took the bend instead of breaking off.
IF??? the thrust hub fits against the taper down by the seals and there's no play on the shaft you can maybe use it.
After you figure out how to start it? Check the run out on the shaft and see if there's any wobble???

Myself I don't know how to start it without a harness.
Really miss FrankA, he took that info with him.
I'd be afraid of shorting something and ruining something expensive$$$$

Try over on the Mercury Forum as the parts you have are all Mercury now.
Ebay sells harnesses.

If the plug is not plugged in to the controls you will have to jump the starter to crank the engine & check for spark

Meaning; use jumper-cables(booster-cables) & put power to the starter-terminal, no need for additional hook-up.
Keep in mind; if it start you have no way of shutting it down (without grounding the ignition wires/cutting-off fuel supply)

MTFBWY, Just hooking up cables will make the motor produce spark?
I thought you needed to energize the ignition?

Hi Jerry,
maybe I said it wrong
don't forget, he has the engine-wiring in place

if this is the system he has, he should not have to; if the BLK/YEL wire is not grounding (as it can't while no controls are connected)
and if you manually apply power to the starter-stud it will crank the engine & produce spark
