1991 force 9.9 flywheel question

Hello everyone,

I have a 91 force 9.9. While on the lake yesterday the motor ran like a top but then after I started her up and headed back to the dock she lost power and sounded like she was running on 1 cylinder. So while it was running I took of the top plug wire and she was still running, then the bottom plug I took off and the motor died. I limped back to the dock and when I got home I check the wires for spark and the top wire was getting none while the bottom was getting spark. So to my question..... I sorta figured out that I probably need a new coil kit with wires. So i got the nut off the flywheel and noticed that there are not any holes tapped on the flywheel to use a conventional puller. I tried renting one from autozone which was a three leg puller but would not fit and it was the largest they had, which was an 6 inch. Is there a special puller that I need to use or should I just heat the shaft up and smack it with a hammer while prying with a pry bar up on it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank.

No need to heat! Put a prybar under the rim of the flywheel at the back side of the block. Pry up while smacking the shaft a good shot. Keep the nut on the shaft even with the tiop of the threads to protect them. The flywheel should pop right off. Sometimes it does take a couple of hits.

If that Force has a bent steel rope pulley on top of the flywheel, it is located by three dents in corresponding depressions in the flywheel. These can be drilled and tapped for a puller.

Before you go for a coil, clean and re-gap the points to .020. Then check for loose or shorted wires from the condensers. Check for shorted wires from the kill switch (looks like brown lamp cord coming from under the flywheel.)

Thanks for the quick reply! I will do that tomorrow. It does have 3 dimples around the shaft. My wife's grandfather said that tapping those might make it off balance? I hope I can get it off with a pry bar and hammer. Also in some other forums people say not to hit them with a hammer because of some bearing you could damage? I am going to try tomorrow and see if I can get it off then loom for loose connections. By the way it does have that brown cord that looks like lamp cord. I thought someone used a lamp cord cause that's all they had laying around. I'll report back after try to get the flywheel off.
