Hi,

I have 115 hp Evinrude engine from 1991 which has been with me for 1 week now. Few days ago the tilt/trim stopped working.

The trim motor sounded it was running downwards, but being in down position it didn't move. I swapped the relays and it slowly moved upwards to a midway position but not higher. Today I bought new relays and went to switch them. The motor had lowered a bit but not to fully down. I changed the relays and it sounds like the trim motor is running.

I opened the connection coming from the motor with the two wires and found the plug quite corroded. After spraying CRC to them I connected jumpers to 12V batter and it sounds like the trim motor is running but nothing is happening. Sometimes it sounds like there is a bad connection somewhere because the running of the trim is not continuous.

Does anyone have any ideas what to try before taking it to repair shop. The boat is in water and is not easily taken to land.

Thanks in advance!

I am a "bit amateur", so I don't know where to check it... And I don't yet have a manual for the engine.

Linden is correct, and by "right side" he means starboard side of the T&T. The slotted screw faces aft and is located halfway up the face of the reservoir cylinder. Use a LARGE screwdriver to open. Fluid level should be even with the hole (i.e. fill until the fluid starts to pour back out on its own). If your engine is not in the "up" position, then you will need to use the same large slotted screwdriver to release the manual release valve which is accessed from the starboard side of the mounting bracket through a hole near the bottom. there are other threads with photo links but it's the only hole on the starboard side of the mounting bracket so that should narrow it down a bit. Once that valve is opened (a couple turns only!!) you should be able to lift the engine, lock the bracket, and re-tighten the manual screw. Once you've checked fluid, let us know results.

Re: 1991 Evinrude 115 hp tilt/trim problem

Hi,

the reason was leaking oil coupling, so not a big deal. The biggest problem was that I couldn't lift the boat from water without a trailer.

Still it looks like I need to change the trim motor next winter because it's quite rusty and maybe not sounding the best anymore.

Thanks for all the help!
