Firstly, thank you for giving me the opportunity to enter your forum to discuss this issue. I have in my possession a 1991 Bayliner 2655 Sunbridge. The problem/concern I have is that I have a minor fuel leak emitting from way under the fuel tank. I have had the fuel tank pressure tested and it is reported that it is coming from the underside front section, but access is impossible. The dealer has responded, that they can repair this tank by cutting above the tank ( which is the master bedroom), and me not being technical minded or a marine architect, find this repair action extreme, thinking that the boat is moulded and this deck would be a major structure. By reading bits and pieces of your forum, I get the sense that removing the tank, could be done by removing the engine and gaining access to some holding down plates,( which I hear may have caused the problem from the start) please correct me if I?m wrong if I?m reading that wrong. Anyway, can someone, who has experienced this problem with fuel tanks on this particular model boat, please give me the right direction. If you have a fuel tank removal plan or drawings to go to that would be excellent and muchly appreciated. I reside in Australia in Queensland.

Ayuh,....

Welcome Aboard Dan,....

While I'm sure your boat could be Deconstruted to remove the Tank,....
A 10 or $20,000.00 repair bill will no doubt make it financially Unfeasible...

Boat builders,... Especially builders of entry-level boats such as your's, Don't build them to be Fixed,....
They build them just to get them Out the Door.....

It may seem Radical, but cutting thru the deck is quite common to swap tanks,...
And,...
Done Right,... There's no structual loss.....

Welcome to iboats! I do not have any plans or drawings to offer but I can tell you that it is not a simple task.

I imagine that "major surgery" is in order and possible one of our members has replaced a fuel tank in a 2655 and will chime in.

Happy Holidays Mate!

First, if you are goint to remove a fuel tank that is leaking, I suggest the tank be siphoned dry then filled with water to prevent the build up of flamable fumes. Then start working.

The tank needs to be mapped out so you know exactly were to cut. A few inspection holes cut over the tank should help. Use a 2 or 3" hole saw. Then identify the edges of the tank and use a circular saw set to the thickness of the floor plus 1/16 inch, and cut the floor away over the tank. Once the tank is out and a new replacement installed, a hatch can be built to cover the tank. That way if you ever need access in the future, the floor won't need to be cut up again.

If you want to browse new plastic tanks, check out oceanlink.com. They have a huge selection, price is good, and tanks are their business. The prices for tanks can be found on the order form on their website.

If your tactfull about opening up the deck you'll be able to seal it right back up using the original cut out section. The trick is locating the exact position of the tank, it's more than likely situated right between the stringers where can sister up a jamb for reattaching the cut-out, then epoxie seal it back into place.
I woner if a metal detecter would work to map out the exact location of the tank? I think they can pick up aluminum too.

I have a 1998 Bayliner 2655 and am going through the exact same problem. Have to remove the engine, then cut out the bulkhead to bed room then cut floor of bedroom to get access to fule tank.
Is this an inherant problem with bayliners. I am in Australia also
