I have a 1991 Force 70 HP outboard. I bought it last year used on a 17 foot Bayliner. I used it about 7 times throughout the summer, but it always has sarted a bit hard, but since it was new to me and summer I just kept using it not knowing if it was normal. If I Prime the fuel bulb nice and hard, have the motor in the down position and use the choke It will usually start after about 6 turns of the ignition. Sometimes it takes longer and I get worried that it won't start at all, but always had. Once it does start, it will continue to start while I am on the lake until the next trip. I put a new battery in and keep it charged before each trip. When I turn the key it cranks real slow. The engine is very clean with no corrosion that I can see. Last week in preparation for this summer I decided to see if it would start. I charged the battery and went through the normal procedures with no luck until the battery was dead. That is when I called a local boat repair shop and ran through the problem with him. He thought it was the starter and had me disconect the battery and connect jumper cables directly to the starter to see if it cranked any faster. It did not. He said it sounded like the starter and offered to sell me one for about $250 plus installation. That is when I found a rebuilt one on ebay for $80.00. It did not help. I will get in to it more tomorrow afternoon starting back at the begining. I guess I will replace the spark plugs even though they were new at the time I purchased it last year. Could my battery be to small? I have a 80 ampere hour now. What do you think is the problem? Or is this normal for this engine?

Sounds like a pretty small battery to me. My deep cycle has 575 CCA and is rated for something like 200 minutes back up. I can crank my motor for a long time on that battery. Try using your car battery for cranking and see if that improves your starting. NOt sure with the force but try increasing your rpm at startup and try engaging the choke for about 3 seconds before you turn the key.

throttle it up a little when you are trying to start it. You can pull the shifter out from the base a half inch or so and push it forward this will put it in neutral in case you didnt know. You can push it foward a little to basically do the same thing you would do with an old car by pumping the gas. Mine will take a few times to start if I dont throttle it up first but when its up it fires on the first time most of the time. Chris

Is it normal for the starter to have such a slow momentum?

I just put on a bigger starting marine battery that has something like 750 cold cranking amps. Still no luck. What next?

We have the same problem with our 1980 115hp chrysler. Once we can get it started for the first time it will start without any problem for the rest of the day. We started to use a gas oil mixture in a spray bottle and spray on the carburator while someone turns the key. Starts right up every time.

My guess it the next step is to either rebuild or replace the starter. Take the brushes out and see what they look like. Usually it it just the brushes and at cap that need to be replaced

Is the Choke actually working. The 1991 Force 70 has a fuel primer solenoid, just below the Carb.<br />if you disconect the rubber hose that goes into the manifold, then push the starter key in , the solenoid wil operate and fuel will flow. Assuming there is fuel pressure. I had a cooked solenoid making the motor very difficult to start.

sounds like the solenoid a small silver cylindrical elecrical part that when you push in your key clicks and sprays petrol directly into the carb it dont cost much to try it

Re: 1991 70 hp Force starts hard

I just got back from the lake and I had to get a tow back to the dock. It didn't start right off the bat, but did start. It got through half the day OK but as soon as I let it rest it would not start again. So to recap, I have replaced the battery, new plugs, new starter, the choke is working and squirting fuel into the carb. I have not checked the spark. How do you do it on these plugs that do not have a gap? If I am not getting spark, then what? I am to the conclusion that it has to be some electical problem.

Re: 1991 70 hp Force starts hard

One other thought: In the past I noticed that when I ran out of fuel in one tank (tank A) and changed from that fuel tank to the other (tank B), it would start very hard. As an experement the next time out I tried to start it on tank B first and it would not. I then switched it to tank A and it started. Coincedence that it just was primed and ready, or is there something wrong with tank B? I am not saying it would never start because when I would run out of fuel in tank A and switched to tank B, it would start after going through all the normal routine as if I was starting it for the first time of the day. I only mention this as it has crossed my nimd in the past that something might be wrong with tank B. I do not think this is the problem for what is listed above, but might indeed be a problem.

OK, I have another observation. I mentioned earlier how the starter seems to be real slow. When I pull the plugs out and turn the ignition the starter goes real fast. I am guessing the starter is good as well as my compression.
