Here is my dilema. I have a 91 Toyota 4 Runner (125,000 miles) with the SR5 V6. It runs strong considering age/miles. I have a 16 foot Alumacraft Center Console with a 25 merc and tow it with ease with two other passengers and a full grown Lab. The 4 Runner only has a tow rating of 3500 lbs and I am considering buying a 25 foot 3000 lb boat (including engine). However, this does not include gas, t-top, gear and etc. I am not planing on trailering it all the time. I just really need to get it from purchase location to home, about 350 miles. The occasional hurricane will bring it out of the water too, and then I will just be pulling home about ten miles.

Anyone out there have an older Toyota with this engine and tow a similar weight? I heard that they (Toyota) are changing the tow rating to 5000 lbs on the new ones. I realize that they probably have more torque and hp now but will mine get the job done for what I need. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Most 25 Footers I know weigh in over 3500# alone before you even consider a trailer. A boat that size probably has a tandem axle trailer and those weigh 1200# extra.
For your safety I would recheck all weights because if you are over the weight limit for your hitch and have a problem, you are liable.
Would you consider posting the type and model?
There might be other owners out there who know the boat much better than I do and could advise you better.

I would consider renting a bigger truck for the haul homme. That way you have the proper engine/brakes and hitch needed for that weight. Make sure the trailer brakes are decent too and the tow home will be safe one.

Good luck.

Boat is a Concept 25 with a 250 merc ob. Hull weight is 2600 lbs according to website. (Yes, it is one of those go fast boats.) According to Merc, engine is 480's so, I'll say 500 lbs. Hitch is rated to 5000 lbs. Just got new brakes all around a month ago. I forgot to inlcude trailer before so I guess I am talking about 4000 lbs.
I probably would not have anyone with me or any surplus weight. I would also be traveling on the highway late to avoid traffic.
A friend of mine, who usually fishes with me, will be getting a new F 250 in the Fall to tow us to SKA tournaments and whatever else I need. I really just want to get it from a to b in emergencies in case my buddies with the Z-71's and Big Fords are not around or taking their boats inland. Thanks.

Hi, Jackpac.

Trying to tow that boat around the block with your 4Runner is playing Russian Roulette with all chambers loaded. DO NOT EVEN CONSIDER IT!!!

Rent or borrow a truck with at least 7500lb towing capacity, or hire someone with such a truck to move the boat for you. 10,000lb would be even better.

If you have AWD and a 2 range transfer case you could probably use it to get the boat to a secure tie-down area in event of a hurricane. NO MORE THAN a couple of miles. Stay in low range and under 25mph.

Don't really mean to sound so bossy, Jackpak. It's the Professor coming out and it is critically important.
