Any suggestions on how to test switch box and do they make a updated one?
I have the thunderbolt system if the switch box has failed this will be the 3rd in 20 yrsDo you have Prestolite ignition system with three blue or black CD modules?
Or do you have Mercury Thunderbolt system with one switch box?
Normally the CD modules or switch boxes can not be tested from resistance with a VOM.
You test for voltage from the stator and triggers to the CD module/switch box and output voltage from the module/box to the ignition coils.
When testing you need a DVA adapter connected to the VOM/multimeter or a multimeter with DVA function.
If no spark at all five cylinders it looks like the stator is bad as it charge the capacitors in the modules/box and if you have Prestolite system and no spark at all it is unlikely all CD modules goes bad at the same time.
Outboardignitiondotcom has the troubleshoot chart for these systems.
Last time I tried to start it it would start but emittely shut off. Herd a sizzling noise from left side of engine now no sparkI have the thunderbolt system if the switch box has failed this will be the 3rd in 20 yrs
Isn't the cdi ign what I have on mine 1 box 5 coils. Been replacing cdi box once with new lasted long term then 2 used lasted about 1 yr each. IS There a better ignition system that worksNo upgrade system as I know.
The Thunderbolt system that Mercury used on the Mercury brand was the last system on Force 150 5 cyl. engine before they stop making the 150Hp in 1995-96. In 1997 Mercury put the CDM ignition system on the larger Force engines 40-120Hp.
