Now that I've got the driveshaft bearing housing in place and tightened the bolts, when i rotate the driveshaft in either direction, both in gear and neutral, i hear a grinding sound within the lower unit. But if i lift up slightly on the driveshaft and rotate it, i don't hear it anymore. I've taken out, lubricated and reinstalled the shims, thrust washer and thrust bearing with no difference. I've inspected the thrust bearings, shims and thrust washer for dents, out of round etc. My other lower unit didn't make this noise. Could it be the diiveshaft spring that's not allowing the driveshaft to ride a little higher? or because it's the counter rotator (hopefully)?
