I am putting trying to rig this motor up. It has been instorage for the last year after shop testing (tested good). When I hooked up battery the ground wire on the shaft housing started smoking and melted the coating off. I had no ignition wiring hooked up when this happened.. just the battery cables on battery.

I obviously have a open circuit on the motor and suspect I created it by crossing the battery wires accidently. possible?

Advice please?

when it smokes its a short circuit.
hook the positive lead from the starter solinoid to the positive battery terminal. hook the negative lead from the pad on the top of the starter to the negative terminal.if you hooked up the battery backwards check the fuse inline near the starter solinoid.
good luck and keep posting

rodbolt what am I looking for when I hook up as you recommended? Is this checking the relay to see if it keeps the short circuit?

if it smokes when you hook it up as reccomended look for a stuck solinoid and starter. or look for any other wires that go from the positive solinoid that got hooked to ground.
