We have no idea of what size engine you are referring to. Do you have the s/n of the engine?

Re: 1990 mercury carburetor

Your s/n comes up as:

MERCURY - ( 15 H.P. (1989 ))
Serial No: 0C115655 Model No: 1015211GD

Parts and Service Bulletin list for s/n 0C115655:

Search Results - Crowley Marine

If you look at item 6 under CARBURETOR ASSEMBLY (15), is this the needle you are referring to? If, so, you would have a difficult time operating with it missing as it meters fuel flow depending on the height of the float to which it is attached.

Re: 1990 mercury carburetor

yeah thats it, but if my carburetor is dirty would there be anyway to run it? my motor was not moving the boat, if i ran the rpms up it wouldn't move the boat but not very fast and then it bogs and stalls out, i made sure my prop was spinning and it was so i cleaned the carb out and noticed that the needle wasn't in it, when cleaned everything leaked, now I'm wondering if the carb is dirty and no needle was in it it would get gas and somehow the dirt was sealing it a little?

I would think that it is highly improbable that it ran without the needle. It will run with dirt in it but most likely will show the symptoms you describe.

Is it not possible that when you dismantled the carb bowl that you lost the needle? It is so easy to do when the float drops as the needle just rests on the float lever.
