1990 mercruiser alpha one shifting problem

we was going down the river running a good speed not pulling at the time and we come to a quick stop motor still running but would not go into forward or reverse. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks

start with what kind of boat, motor, and drive

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,...... With virtually no info to go on, I'll Guess,.....

Drain the drive,.... Look for metal in the oil,.....

Drop the lower unit,..... Does the top of the vertical shaft still have the splines on it,..??

would not go into forward or reverse

Move the shifter and see if the cables are moving on the shift plate. If it is moving with motor off, trim the drive full up and see if the shift fork is moving. If it is moving get into it as Bondo mention

1990 caravelle with 4.3 mercruiser alpha one shift cables are good. Splines are still on top shaft

guess that means you dropped the lower. How much oil came out?
can be upper gears ran dry or engine coupler went.
