I pulled the lower unit with drive shaft. How do you remove the drive shaft from the lower unit to replace the oil seals?
My boat was throwing oil from the drive shaft area inside the boat.As the drive bellows was storing oil.
How do you remove the drive shaft from the lower unit to replace the oil seals?

The drive shaft is not in the lower unit.

You need to pull the whole outdrive, not just the lower unit, Then remove the ujoint shaft and bearings, then disassemble to get to the seal. You may also need the yoke if it has a groove worn in it.
Here is the manual for that drive, section 3A covers replacing the seal.

Sorry,I don't know the spec terms of things.Let me refraze the question,
On the upper unit,How do you pull out/remove the drive shaft to replace the seals?
Where, the drive shaft goes into the upper unit.I believe, there's a oil seal or a 0-ring bad.I see in the manual how you have to remove the top plate to aline the gears when assembling. But,in the manual doesn't explain how to remove/pull the Drive shaft from the drive shaft housing. The manual doesn't explain in simple terms or show how to do this. All the manual say's is "As explained in this chapter".Well,I've read the chapter.Doesn't explain how.It shows how to disassemble the drive shaft to replace seals.Doesn't show how to remover the drive shaft from the upper unit drive shaft housing.

I thought it did a good job of explaining how to remove it. Here is from pages 3A-12 and 13.

i think he meant to say his manual does not depict it the same way as the Mercruiser manual does.

I just gave him the link to the manual above in reply #2. Before that he didn't have a manual.

Re: 1990 Mercruiser 4.3 L Alpha 1 sterndrive repair?

Thanks for the information. And yes,my manual is the manual to my boat not a Mercruise manual.Manuals deffer from brand yrs & types.
In order to loosen the retainer ring,Is the threads righty tighty lefty loosy?Or reverse.Because, this thing is tight.Manual doesn't say what direction to loosen & tighten?May sound like a dumb question. But,rather be safe then sorry.

Last question,
Why in the manual does it say to remove the 4 bolts for the top plate.I don't see the reason for this.Seem's all you need to do is loosen the retainer ring and pull the drive shaft out.I only want to replace the drive shaft seals not the seals under the spider gears.I marked the positions of the drive shaft and gears. Now ready to remove the retainer ring. That retainer ring is tight not budging.I'm hoping I'm turning the correct direction?I blasted the retainer ring with Pin/oil letting it seat before trying again. Also, waiting for the answer right or left turn for the retainer ring removal?
Thanks!

I hope you are using the correct spanner for the retainer. Otherwise You'll bugger it up. It is torqued very tight, 200 ft-lbs, as I am sure you have noticed in the manual Don sent you for your drive.
