Hey everybody, I'm having some problems, and any help would be greatly appreciated. Currently have a 1990 Mercruiser 5.0 V8 w/ 2bbl carb. When getting on plane and boat leans back, boat occasionally begins to stall-out, like its starving for fuel. It will only do this occasionally, regardless of amount of fuel in tank. I'm almost positive this is a fuel delivery problem, but I'm wondering if anybody has had a similar problem? Is it possible the carb may just need a good cleaning? Also, vessel is very hard to start, whether its hot or cold.

Thanks for your time.

try your fuel filter, look for kinks in fuel line and then fuel pump

Kinda sounds like water in the float bowl. Check that spin-on fuel filter for water. If it's in there, some could've reached the carb.

Thank you all for the help, I will check each of your suggestions. If water is in the float bowl I'm assuming I need a new fuel/water separator? I believe it is the original, w/ 220 hrs on the ticker.

Could the hard starting have anything to do with a problem with the choke?

Thank you

You have to crank that engine a while to fill carb with gas. Pump it and it should fire up. Crank for 4 secs and pump in taht order, if you replace carb put a 4bbl on it

I would think that if you did Any Preventative Maintaince on this boat, you Probably Wouldn't have the minor problems you have Now.....
Find your Owners Manual or Buy a Service Manual,(look at the Top of This Page) Or Pay Someone to service this Poor Beast.....
You are Way Past the Service Limits of Many of your boats Systems.... The Fuel Filter is Only 1 of them.....
10 years,+ 220 hours....
How long has it been since you changed the Oil ?????

Bondo - I'm not positive its the original, as I picked the boat up at the end of this years boating season. Considering the age and condition of the boat I'd say this boat has had nothing but excellent maintenance performed over the past 14 years. Before I took the boat out (I only had about a week of good boating in last year) I had a full maintenance check performed, however the fuel/water separator wasn't an issue brought up by the service writer. An oil change was done at this time along with a tune-up and compression test (160/165ish) on all 8 cylinders. The previous owner included a binder full of maintenance reciepts and a descriptive maintenance log, but nowhere in this does he mention replacing the fuel filter.

WoW, Well I'm Glad to here That....
Ya had me Nervous there  ... That's a lotta Hours on a filter.....

These fella's are heading you the right direction....
My 1st Guess is the Carb is in need of a Good Cleaning,+ a Kit.... While doing the Tuning Mode of the Carb Rebuilt, You'll be able to dial in the choke for better Cold Starts....

I would check the filter on the carb and make sure it is for marine purpose and not automotive. If an automoblle cartridge filter with a flow restrictor is in there ,that would cut the flow of gas when the angle of the boat is at its greatest, which would be when climbing onto plane.Charlie

Re: 1990 Mercruiser 305 Accelerating problems

I am a mechanically inclined individual, however I've never really worked on Carbuerated vehicles/boats. Is a carb kit easy to install? As I stated above, its a 1990 Mercruiser Alpha 1 w/ a 2bbl carb. If the work is very intricate I'd hate to screw it up any more than it already is.

Thanks guys

Well, If, "I am a mechanically inclined individual",And you've made it this far,But, " however I've never really worked on Carbuerated vehicles/boats." I'd rate it at about an 8..... I Suggest you "Buy a Service Manual,(look at the Top of This Page)". Then go get a Carb Kit,+ Have At It.......
Make Sure of your Measurements on the Floats.....
And, Pay Attention to the Tuning Details.....
