I am new to the forums so thanks in advance for the help....
We recently bought a 24ft pontoon boat with a 1990 40hp Mariner Magnum OC268669. The motor is very reliable. Starts every time. After we bought it, we changed impeller and put new prop on that matched the motor (old prop was shot). We went through the carbs and rebuilt them. Are problem is, the motor will max at 4000 rpms and that's it. I know we should be getting 5000-5500 max rpms. When I play with the trim, rpms will change by a few 100 rpms or so.
We get a strong smell of gas while it runs. I need to know where to start because I think it might be an electrical issue with plugs not firing??? I have the manual but not the multimeter the manual recommends. Are there quick tests I can perform to verify the problem without the tester?
Thanks.
