Hey folks, my motor is not "peeing" when idling, but it does when throttled, is this normal for this year? Thanks.

Some mercs do not pee when they are idling. The 2.5 litre is one some of them don't pee until about 1200 rpm. Will need a serial #

Pop the cowl and follow the pee tube. If it winds up on the rear of the thermostat cover then it won't pee till the stat opens. If plumbed off the exhaust manifold, or directly off the top of the block for V engines then it pees as soon as soon as the impeller gets water up there.

some won't at all till stats open... some stats have a tiny by-pass hole/slot that let it "dribble" till they open.. some don't.... lake water temp will be a contributing factor as well....... just make sure your over temp warning buzzer is workin'......

justa another reason a water pressure gauge is important!

If the motor is new to you change the water pump anyways that way you know it's new

I'm not a "change to be changing" guy, but this one is a go for sure, no doubt. Time and money well spent.......and along with that a trip to the lower unit for an oil change.

I have a 1989 Mercury V-135 (V-6) SeaRay Edition that I'm assuming is the same motor as yours. When I first got it, it did not pee at all. Then I changed the impeller and it pee'd a very light dribble. I changed the thermostats and still nothing. Then I changed all the hoses and all was good! Turned out the hose that connected to the pee hole was clogged. Once the hose was off, I blew into one end and all sorts of nasty crap came out. It seemed a spider made a home of the hose and a bunch of organic dead insect matter was clogging the hose. Now it pees great at idle, and very strong when acceleration is applied. However, it does take 5-10 secs before water starts to come out after the motor is turned on. So if you're not getting any water at idle, I'd say do what I did. Change the impeller, thermostats, hoses. Better to be safe then blow your powerhead from overheating! ; )
