1990 Johnson Tracker 60hp starts but will not stay running.

I got the boat out yesterday after a long winter. I rebuilt the carbs over the winter following all the instructions and reassembled. I put the muffs on, put fresh gas in the tank, lift the warm up lever hit the primer and she fires right up but then dies. After several tries it will only stay running if I hit the primer and it gets that shot of gas otherwise it dies. Carbs are set 1 and 1/2 out and also ended up changing fuel filter screen and replacing fuel line inside the motor to and from filter. Any thoughts on what to check know?

Try pumping the primer bulb and see if it keeps running instead of hitting the primer. If it still dies I'm betting that you missed something in the carbs. Are you sure that you have your linkages put on correctly?

Pumping the primer will not keep it running I tried that and it was just the primer button. I ended up checking the fuel lines going from the VRO to the carbs and found a spot that was dripping a tiny bit so I pulled them off and will replace them. I also pulled all 3 carbs back off and have my neighbor the carb guru coming to double check them for me. Also not sure about setting linkage? what should I look for with setting that? THanks Fireman

?????Have you read an owners manual ??-----------Normal for it to stall after it starts.------It is up to the operator to push key in momentarily to provide extra fuel until the motor warms a bit.-----------------Just not the same as a modern car that does all this for you.

I have not read the owners manual but have had this motor for 8 years. I understand that it is normal for it to stall a couple times upon start up but it is not normal for it to continue to have to do it over and over again. I understand it is not a modern car and that it is in fact an outboard and has different steps needed for proper start up and warm up. What it is doing is not normal for it to do. Thanks for your input

Does the tell tale for the waterpump indicator come off the side of the block or off the top ??---Perhaps a compression test should be done to check overall condition of the cylinders / pistons / rings.---Post the results if you like.

Well that did not change much, still won't stay running by itself. Carbs all look like they are synced, all new fuel lines. i kept it running with the primer for a couple minutes and the checked the plugs, the were barely warm. Shouldn't they feel hot by that time? The tell tale comes out I side, I have read about the service bulletin about moving it but don't think that is something I want to tackle at this time. Another day or so and I may have to bite the bullet and as much as I hate to I may have to admit defeat and take her in. If I take it in I will have them get a compression test.

Well, the service bulletin came out in 1994 to move that tell tale and they do not publish those as a joke !-------Test and see if spark will jump a gap of 7/16" on all 3 leads.-----That is an adequate test of the ignition system.-------------Compression test is most important on this engine.

I will test the spark see what I got. I got to thinking and last year I would run it stop and fish for while, maybe even an hour and then it would not start. It would generally start again but maybe not for like 10 minutes or so. I figured maybe the carbs would need to be cleaned apparently that was not it. Once I get this thing running I will more than likely move the tell tale.

Some 45 years ago when I was a teenager a couple of fellows came into the dealer.-----------They said " we can not get the carburetor adjusted on this 1956 model Evinrude 7.5 hp.-----------I said " let's put it in the tank and I will save you a trip back "-------------Motor would not run properly and did not respond to carburetor adjustments.---------------------I removed sparkplugs and one had water on it.------The problem was a blown head gasket !------------Fact , most folks have trouble figuring what is wrong with outboards and that is still the same today.

Checked the spark and it did jump the 7/16" on all. the Top on was blue, middle one was kinda orangish then blue the second time, bottom one was kinda orangish. Should they all be a dark blue?

They should all be the same.---Try switching coils to see what happens.----I use a $40.00 compression tester.---It is the most important tool in trouble shooting of outboard motors.---I own a number of these 3 cylinder motors and know them inside out !

First of all, this problem has nothing to do with the location of the tell-tale.
I don't know why this was even brought into the conversation.

Secondly, the fact that you hit the key to activate the primer, and you can keep it running, tells me that the carb IDLE circuits are not clean.

There a couple of key places that you need to look....
1. The brass tubes that extend down into the bowl. The center tube is the source of the idle fuel. That tube must be clear. The only way
to be absolutely sure is to run a wire up thru there until it comes out the other side. Use carb cleaner, and a wire to clear that tube.
"What other side?" he says..... Well the other side that exists under the core plug on top of the carb body that you should have already had off....right?

2. In the front of the carb, there is an idle air bleed orifice. #7 in the parts drawing. If you have those clogged up, it will not pull fuel properly.
Unlikely that all three would be stopped up, but something to look at. I have seen them get clogged with fine dust from the foam insulation under the cowling, if you have that stuff.

3. The round gasket that fits around the previously mentioned brass tubes. If that is crushed, torn, otherwise not making a seal, the carb will not draw fuel properly.

4. Under the plate on top of the carb you will find very tiny holes drilled and opening up into the venturi . Those holes must be clear.

Checked again and they they are blueish on ends and orange in middle. Weak spark? As for the carbs I ran wire through them both times I pulled them. Also it I advance past idle with throttle it will die after 5 to 20 sec so it seems it's not just the idle.

I have no idea about the color of the spark, but all 3 of mine are bluish-white.

Just curious if you have or are planning to rebuild the carbs? If so, the rebuild kits should come with new core plugs, which daselbee refers to for access to the other end of the brass tubes (the existing ones must be destroyed with a center punch to remove).

I just rebuilt all 3 carbs on my '89 70, and although it takes time to do everything properly, it is not difficult if you have the service manual. I had Sierra rebuild kits, and their instructions were a little too generic.

The only special tools I needed were the jet removal tool (I made one with an old screwdriver and grinder); the OMC ones are $40. I attached a couple different DIY diagrams I found on Google. I also got a little K&L jet cleaning tool set for about $10 on Amazon, which made things easier. And I needed a couple different flat punches for reinstalling the core plugs from Home Depot. OMC recommends sealing the outside of the new core plugs with Gasoila, I used clear fingernail polish and made sure it was completely dry.

Pulled all carbs again, pulled core plugs and recleaned everything again paying extra special attention to the idle passages and jets. Everything looked clear. I will reinstall tomorrow and give it a go.
