Have my eyes on a 1990 9.9 for 275. Havent seen it yet but heard it runs but dosent spit water. Is this worth the gamble?

$275 is a screaming deal around here for a 1990. I can't get a 1975 9.9 for that price unless it was busted. If it's not spitting water I'd check the head carefully for melted paint from overheating and I'd do a compression test.

If the paint on the head is not discolored, indicating that it was overheated and the compression is good, that is a good price.

funny, i just bought a 25 hp evinrude 1993 for 280...sat for 5 years... put new plugs in and started right up, BUT DIDN"T PUMP water... i checked compression when i first looked at it, looked for signs of overheating, and drained some lower unit oil... if ya got compression, and no paint peeling around the head... buy the sucker..good luck
