1990 Johnson 120 V4

I recently acquired a 1990 Johnson 120 V4 that is running hot at idle and low operating speeds. The previous owner did not replace the impeller, and I'm sure that is the problem. My problem is that I am having some difficulty removing the lower unit. The procedure is straight forward, except where to disengage the shift rod, the manual refers to a retaining clip that I cannot locate. Is it near where the shift cables attach to the shift lever? Also once I disengage it and pull the lower unit, the drive shaft will be attached so I'll need to have the motor up to pull the lower unit off?<br /><br />Thanks for any suggestions or comments.

yes, motor will need to be up, I dont have a manual, but I would start by looking at where the shift cable connects and then visually follow the pivot shaft and you will see were it connects to the shift rod, disconnect it here, when you pull the lower unit you will see that the shift rod and drive shaft protrude from the lower unit, After the lower unit is removed, be careful not to rotate the shift shaft, as it is threaded and shift rod height is critical. good luck

I have an older Evinrude, look on the side of the housing above where the lower unit splits off the engine for an inspetion plate. remove it to find an inspection plate behind it, remove it to find the linkage. anyway thats where mine is.

On my '92 200 rude, I have to remove the lower cowling to access the shift rod thingy... its only 3 or 4 bolts. Maybe thatll help...<br /><br />-mikec

Thanks for all the help, I got it taken care of. I had to remove the lower cowling to access the shift release screw, which was located on the opposite side of the block from the shift arm.
