I nabbed a 5hp Force 52F90A (1990) at a local flea market yesterday. $40 and it is clean inside and out, no corrosion and paint is nearly 100%. It has strong compression & spark. Seller claimed "it may have carb issues".
Yes it does.
I put it in a barrel and rigged up fuel to it. Was able to get it to fire but it won't run more than a second or two. I notice the lower cowl filling with gas.
I took the carb off and found the fuel bowl nut was loose. I removed the fuel bowl and everything look pretty good in there but I noticed the cork bowl gasket looked a little beat up. When I tried to remove it from the groove it disintegrated. I reassembled it with a tiny bead of RTV in the groove just to move forward. I put it back together but need to wait a day for that to cure.

So my question is proactive... If this thing was thrown back together because the carburetor is hopeless, where do I find a replacement? I can't find any original replacement online and nothing looks like it on Amazon.
It's a Tillotson carb. Part number might be 1300-F687061-1.
It has a strong resemblance to carbs used on some Tecumseh 3-5hp mowers & blowers I've tinkered with over the years. Would I be able to swap parts from a similar carb or are boat motor carbs 'special'? Certainly the throttle linkage is special as it rides against the ignition timing plate.

RTV in any carburetor is a big mistake.----Repair kit is listed as available.----Will cost more than what you paid for the motor.

As I said...IF the carb is junk...
in 50 years of playing with carbs, only once have I experience a carb that was actually bad. that was because it was full of water for 3 years. all other carbs can be gone thru

Who do you trust to get parts for these oldies?
When I Google that tillotson part number I get several "not found" sites, and ones that look to be redirects (or identical copies) of another site.

And I do 'get it' about junk from Amazon but I've had nothing but good results if parts and sellers have excellent reviews. Never blindly buy the cheapest.
