Hi All,

In peeling back the onion that is my force outboard, I realize the reverse lock lever handle was cracked so I ordered a new one. The kit came with a new shaft (with handle attached), but I cannot see how to get the old one off!

Seems from the schematics on the shaft itself (under the motor) it shows a "pin" going into a small plastic device that has the hook rod on it that rotates with the handle as turned. I can take the rod off (no worries) but the shaft seems to have some plastic fasteners and , what looks like some sort of washer / fastener?

I was thinking of cutting the old one in half, and pulling the 2 parts out so I can get the pin out of the plastic device and re apply in the new shaft.

Anyone else get this off before and if so, how???

Pics??
I think you need to remove the spring pin in the plastic piece.
Assemble it and reinstall the pin.
Manual says: Undo the nut on the bottom of rod.
Drive out the spring pin on the lock arm.
Reinstall.

I do it all the time: In the front of the shaft there is a plastic bushing. The casting around this bushing frequently corrodes and the bushing grabs the shaft so tightly that you break the handle if you force it. At the rear is another plastic bushing--same story. Now the plastic cam is held to the shaft with a roll pin. Sometimes you can drive out the roll pin and sometimes not. In the front of the shaft there is USUALLY a spring clip or E clip in a groove. This prevents the shaft from working forward. This must be removed to allow you to pull out the shaft after removing the cam.

The shaft will be either stainless or aluminum. In either case, it is acceptable to cut the shaft to remove it but, of course, stainless will be more difficult.

When installing the new shaft and handle, clean very well the two bushing holes and coat them with anti-seize to prevent future jamming.

Hey guys
Thanks for the help. Impossible to remove without the right tools. Seems the motor has to come off in order to get any leverage or clearance under there.

Gave up and bringing it into shop on Friday. :(

Thanks again.
