I just picked up this boat last week and the first 3 trips went without a hitch (except the batteries wouldn't charge).
This week I replaced the two dead batteries with one Costco marine/RV battery and installed a new head unit and speakers. I headed to the river and boated for 30-40 miles before stopping and having lunch on the shore. After lunch the battery was not cranking the motor over well and I eventually needed a jump to get it fired up. Once I got it fired I decided to head back to the dock, got the boat on a plane and then after 20-30 seconds on a plane it lost half or more of its power. The motor still ran (and sounded good), but the RPM's would not get high enough to get the boat going over 10MPH. My tach showed I was running 4000+ RPM's, but it sounded more like 2k- to my ears. It was almost like it was starving for fuel, but the bulb had pressure and the filter was clean.
I also made the mistake of disconnecting the battery cables while the boat was running to check for a bad connection. As I was re hooking them up, my head unit 'popped', started smoking (its a goner) and my voltmeter went from its usual 13.5-14.0 range to pegged at 16.
Any speculation as to what happened? Can removing the battery cables while running kill the voltage regulator? Can this all be tied into the loss of power?
Thanks!
