I have a 1990 bayliner with the force 120 HP L-Drive motor in it. The motor runs terrible, and upon breaking the motor open, I saw a scared up cylinder wall and a bad piston. I Have read plenty of postings with this problem, but have never read any that say anything about swapping the motor, or swapping the motor and the L-Drive. Is it possible to adapt another motor on top of this L-Drive, and is it possible to just use a whole new motor and drive unit? or should I just rebuild this engine and milk it for what I can? Any help is greatly appreciated.

you can get a remanufactured 120 L-drive powerhead here:

http://www.maxrules.com/fixforcepowerhead.html

there are a lot of other places that sell rebuilt powerheads also, just do a search for rebuilt, or remanufactured powerheads.

I am not familiar with the L-drive but I have a force 125 that had a blown piston, got quoted 1500 for rebuild, can buy powerhead allready rebuilt for bout 1600. I decided to rebuild myself. 2 pistons were allready re-done a couple yrs ago so I only rebored the 2 that were still original. All parts and machining cost me only bout 500+ and it's fun learning how these things work

bore: $75 each hole
gasket kit: $80
Pistons $80 each
rings for existing pistons: $25 each set
Wrist pin bearings $14 each

that's for mine, don't know if yours would be close, or if you want to try doing it, I just didn't want to put all that money into an old Force

No other motor will work with the l drive.

Most likely, no other motor will even fit in the boat.

Best bet is to remove the motor and drive.
Patch/rebuild/modify/reinforce the transom.
Then hang an outboard back there.
