Hi everyone. I recently purchased a 1990 Evinrude 6hp (model E6SLESR) outboard. The previous owner said he had just changed the lower unit oil. After running it for about 20 minutes I noticed oil oozing out of the circled hole. There are two small holes in the lower unit joint on each side of the engine. Oil was only comming out on this side. There wasn't a whole lot..may e 1/2 tsp. It looked (at least I thought at the time) like it was dark blue fluid on the rag..although the pic looks brown. Thanks.

Re: 1990 Evinrude 6hp Oil Leak

You would expect to see some partly bunt oil from the fuel plus water from the leg draining from there.
You need to be sure it is not gear oil though. From the fuel it will smell of gasoline. Gear oil smells foul ( even fouler than gasoline ... much)

It would be wise to check the gear oil for signs of water ingress.

Unblock the drain hole the other side with a bit of wire.

You realise that is a sail version... I spotted the square exhaust outlet and the two AV plates but confirmed by the model number. I hope you are not using it on anything other than a sail boat or you will be disappointed with it.

Thanks. I will read up on changing the lower unit lube and give that a go. Yep, it is on a sailboat. I should have said I bought a sailboat, and it came with the engine. The 'oil' smelled like gasoline rather than something nasty. I guess I will get an oppertunity to smell the gear lube soon enough.

Once you smell the gear oil you'll always recognise the smell. Strong sort of onion/garlic smell.
