As everyone here knows, I just had this motor rebuilt. Can anyone tell me what RPM operating range is? Right now it runs 29 mph @ 5400 RPM, but rarely run it 4900. And yes before you all freak out, I did do a thorough break-in before I opened it all the way up. It has great hole shot since I put the Hydrofoil on it, but it still seems like I have to run atleast 4200 RPM just to stay on plane. Would a 4 blade prop help that? Smart tabs are out of the question. They cost too much, and Im poor. The boat is a 1991 Smokercraft 161 Magnum. Me= 275 18gallons of gas, 10 fishing poles, 8 tackle boxes, plus all the other crap. Maybe I just need a bigger motor. Boat rated for 90. 90hp is a V4, so maybe I go with a 130 V4? :D (see who freaks on that one) :D

Nathan

You may very well be underpowered for that boat, but you may also be overpropped. The operating range for your motor is 5000-6000 RPM's. 5400 is on the light side. I would prop it to turn at least 5800 and make sure the motor is at the correct heigth. I would stick with a 3 blade prop, but go down a couple of inches and see how it responds.
