1990 evinrude 40 hp vro

i am getting a tick sound in top end of top cylinder i have no alarms,but i did have spark lever cam break and i replaced it,do you think the spark control rod could cause this? or vro system falure on top piston

buzzman,<br /><br />The noise could be about anything.<br /><br />The VRO injects the oil BEFORE the carburetors, thus it CANNOT be cylinder selective. Either it's working for the entire engine, or not working at all.<br /><br />You may be running lean on the top cylinder. That would be a function of a carb jets being clogged.<br /><br />What do the spark plugs look like?

spark plugs on bottom piston are lihgt brown and a little wet. top plug dark brown and drier.i have added oil to gas and have vro running at same time now tring to see if this takes the noise away but does not help yet, if spark cam is not set to specs. will this cause a click sound in top end.what is the tell tell sign that the top end is fried,run good starts ok,rough idle now ,when i but double oil
