So I've got my dad's 1990 Evinrude 30hp E30TELES engine that I did a bunch of work on today. This forum was a great resource to rebuild the water pump and fix some other odds and ends.

One weird thing - when I tested the compression I got 135 on the top cylinder which seems reasonable but I got 180 on the bottom. From the research I've done, that sounds quite high. Would normally question low or no compression and suspect a head gasket etc, but what about high compression? Could it just be caked up with carbon?

bad compression guage or operator error. Crank engine without plugs in, ground plug leads or use remote start switch with key off. Retest. post results

Thanks I did it with one plug in at a time. With both out I got 118/119 top/bottom. All is well :)
