Tried to start my evinrude yesterday like i always do before i go to the lake the next day. Started cranking, didnt want to start. It was turning over fine. Stopped for a second, then tried again, thought the battery was dead because it wasn't spinning as fast. So i charged the battery over night, went out today, same problem. Thought at first it was just in a bind, adjusted it, still same. Took spark plugs out so there was no compression on motor, still the same. Took starter off the flywheel and still not spinning like it should and the bendix gear is not kicking out like it should. Is this a starter problem? or a starter solenoid problem?

Could be either. Try to jump start the starter direct. If it turns over normally, then I'd be looking to a faulty starter solenoid. If it is stills sluggish, I'd have a look inside the starter before you purchase a new one. Any Bombardier dealer can get replacement armature brushes for you. You may want to clean the carbon dust out of the starter when you reassemble. I'd regrease the armature bushings. Also, a very light oil should be used on the bendix gear.

I believe it is the solenoid. Went out the next morning still the same problem, that afternoon after calming down from missing the lake i go out there to take the starter off and then stop and just check to see if working, it was working! All I did was unhook the positive on the starter and the negative on the battery and hooked right back up. Got a new solenoid on the way.

Very important to have clean tight connections. Take them all apart, file them to a shine, then re tighten. Ensure that all cables are free of nicks, cuts, abrasions, and are not corroded internally. Are you getting 12.65 volts at the starter? If so may be time for a rebuild. If not, time to start looking down the line. Let us know what you find if you need help troubleshooting further.
