Here's an interesting one.
When I pulled the screws to drain/refill the lower unit this spring all I got was a few drops. This was very concerning, but I thought maybe I drained it last fall and didn't refill (I know, bad Idea). Anyway, I refilled it and haven't had it on the water yet. A few days ago I noticed a puddle under the lower unit. I store the motor in the tilt position and noticed a trail of oil on the underside of the lower unit starting from the tail end (prop). I pulled the prop to see where the oil was coming from and noticed it wasn't coming from the shaft seals (they were dry). I lowered the unit to drain all the rain water sitting in the exhaust cavity and still didn't see the source of the leak. I then pulled the fill plug to see how much had leaked and got a cup or two of water and maybe a cup of lower unit oil. Did I mention this boat hasn't been on the water yet? Looking at the vague pictures in the manual it looks like there is an oring seal on the back side of the bearing assy. I assume the seal failed and over time the rain water displaced the oil by heating and cooling (sun).
I ordered a lower unit seal kit, but now I'm wondering if I should replace the bearings as well? Also this seems like an odd failure, anyone else have this issue?

You need to pressure test it, it could be leaking from anywhere.
